Tap into Sustainability

Capital Regional District (CRD) is handing out functional yet well-designed stainless steel water bottles decorated with the slogan “Tap into Sustainability.” The sipper spout allows for easy access to mess-free hydration while preventing leaks.

This initiative is part of an effort to reduce the number of plastic bottles being consumed, and promote the message that Victoria’s tap water is potable – in other words, clean, fresh and delicious!

Did you know that according to the CRD…

  • Every year, the world spends $100 billion on extracting, altering, packaging, shipping and drinking bottled water.
  • It takes over 47 million gallons of oil to produce the world’s plastic water bottles. It takes 3-5 litres of water to produce one bottle of water.
  • Sooke Reservoir holds 92.7 billion litres of drinking water- that’s comparable to filling 36,800 Olympic-sized swimming pools!

To learn more about our water supply, here is the CRD’s data on our drinking water.

5th Annual “Unsung Hero” Banquet Honours Walter Adams

Gerry has emceed the Unsung Hero Banquet for the past four years. This year he is helping to organize the event but will not be attending as he will be representing Sector Learning Solutions at the Chamber Business Awards Gala – where we are nominated for Business of the Year (1 to 10 employees) Award.

Gerry urges you to please consider attending the 2012 Unsung Hero Banquet to  support Walter Adams and the Rainbow Kitchen.

Walter Adams, a tireless volunteer at the Rainbow Kitchen, has been chosen as this year’s “Unsung Hero” by the First Unitarian Church of Victoria and the Community Council. He will be honoured at a banquet on Friday, April 27.

This is the fifth year that the church and Council have honoured a local person for their low-key quality public service. The Rainbow Kitchen will receive a donation of up to $4,500 and Adams will be Guest of Honour at a celebration dinner in the church attended by 100 guests.

The project partners describe unsung heroes as ordinary people doing extraordinary things within “social profit” (otherwise known as non-profit) organizations. The annual award is intended to awaken the rest of the community to “some quietly remarkable people in our midst.”

Other nominees for this year’s award are Jennifer Powell, a home care nurse and co-founder of the Moms and Mentors Society, Don Cain a mentor for street people, Dominga Passmore, a Montessori teacher and president of the Victoria Filipino Canadian Association, active with the Inter-Cultural Association, Hazel Meredith, executive director for the BC Schizophrenia Society; Clive Beal and Pam Oliver for their work in art therapy and founders of the Pandora Arts Collective Society; Linda Geggie for her work in food security and founder of LifeCycles Project Society; and Geoff Hughes, executive director of the Vancouver Island Addiction Recovery Society.

“Picking a winner is a tough exercise,” said Ted Humphreys, one of the organizers, “because each of these nominees is, in fact, a local hero, with a track record to prove it.”
